Real Example of Proven YPSI Success
Recently YPSI took a “hard serve” for a new client that was being issued as a third alias summons and complaint. The Defendant lived in a controlled access apartment building in a busy down town Chicago neighborhood. The Defendant owned and operated a bustling corner restaurant about a block away. The previous detective had told the client that he couldn’t get into the building and that the employees at the restaurant had been instructed to lie for their boss, the Defendant. The detective had failed to get the serve on several occasions.
My partner and I made our way downtown. She dropped me off in the neighborhood then she played hide and seek with the parking enforcement officer while I attempted service. I don’t smoke, but I always have a pack of cigarettes at my disposal. I’m a rather large man and can be intimidating if you don’t know me, so when it was time to hang out on the sidewalk outside of the apartment I went through the ruse of smoking while I people watched and awaited my break into the building. I generally wear a badge and show credentials while serving, but for this case I wanted to be covert. I eventually got into the three story store front apartment building, only to get no answer at the Defendant’s door.
We had been previously briefed by our client with a physical description of the Defendant so my partner and I walked the block to the restaurant and ordered coffee. We ended up ordering tiramisu and drinking several cups of coffee and eventually the Defendant came out of the kitchen to collect money from the cash register at the bar. That was my chance.
The Defendant didn’t want to be embarrassed in front of his staff or his clientele so we went to a private area of the restaurant for the service. The Defendant apologized for lying and hiding from the other detective, and we actually exchanged phone numbers to facilitate future service and avoid any embarrassment.
Our new client is now cleaning out their cold case file by sending them to YPSI. We’ve been able to serve several more second and third alias summonses for them. In the end my new client is very pleased that we took the time to accomplish the “hard serve” and I found a great Italian place in the city for tiramisu and coffee.
